What's upcycling?

Just like the name implies, the "up" in "upcycle" is when we elevate how we reuse a material. By converting an item into a new product, it's given an entirely different identity, along with a refurbished purpose and value.

From an eco standpoint, this process is special because it helps cure a major waste problem we have in the fashion industry. When garments are made with slight design defects during the manufacturing process, they don't always make their way to retail — instead, they're dumped in landfills. These garments, however, often still hold great value with the potential to be repurposed into something of high quality.

This solution is upcycling, whereby companies can find creative ways to reuse materials. This initiative helps reduce the crowding of green space within our communities.

At Chelsea King, part of our mission is to embrace fabrics and textiles in all stages of the design process. By partnering up with like-minded companies, and designers we can maximize the usability of a wide range of beautiful, eco-friendly materials by turning unused garments into our signature handmade scrunchies and hair ties.

Like us, Tofino Towel Co. is a believer in the "slow route" to luxury. Inspired by the stunning natural landscape of Tofino, British Columbia, every towel, throw and robe is designed from the heart using earth-loving materials.

Their choice of using Certified Organic Turkish Cotton was very intentional. Not only is it more absorbent, it releases moisture more effectively. In addition, because it remains untouched by the typical chemicals involved in mass-produced goods, Tofino Towel products stay soft, and the certified organic cotton is able to maintain its own natural antibacterial abilities.

Tofino Towel Co. works directly with fair-trade artisans from Turkey and their generations-old tradition of hand-looming. Ethically sourced and hand-woven, Tofino Towel Co. creates designs that last. While their hands-on production methods are more labour intensive, thanks to this approach, the words "quality" and "craftsmanship" have become synonymous with Tofino Towel Co., just like the age-old traditions used to create their products.

With the increase in lower quality, factory produced products, many Turkish families and communities lost their livelihoods. Thanks to the "quality first" slow-fashion commitments of Tofino Towel Co., and others, these master artisans and their families can continue to utilize their incredible talents and teach future generations to carry forward these otherwise lost traditions.

To provide some perspective - where mass factory production can turn out 30,000 lesser quality alternatives per day, the care and attention invested into creating a single Tofino Towel can take their artisans a full day or longer to craft. From the hand-woven shuttle loom to the intricate detailing of the hand-tied fringing and tassels, Tofino Towel Co. is not only preserving a centuries-old art, but they're also sharing the gift of luxurious, long-lasting quality with all of us.

A Message from the Artisans...

Nature is a unique source of inspiration for us. Of course, we consume while producing, like every organism. However, one of our greatest efforts is to significantly reduce the traces it leaves.

Together, we believe that less is more — a motto that for us begins with choosing the right materials. Through our collaboration with Tofino Towel Co. we're able repurpose their 100% organic cotton fabrics which are Oeko-Tex certified and hand-woven by their team of master artisans. Although any imperfections in their products are extremely rare, the handweaving method is still a human process, so tiny flaws are always possible. When discovering any items with these subtle imperfections, Tofino Towel Co. works to find a new purpose and life for their quality fabrics. That's where we come in. In collaboration with Tofino Towel Co. and our joint upcycle efforts, we gladly take these versions which aren't destined for retail and are grateful for the opportunity to repurpose them into Chelsea King scrunchies and hair ties.
