Kayla's Tribute To Her Dad
Every Fabric Has A Story
Every Fabric
Has A Story
Every fabric tells a story. So when that fabric is upcycled from a simple heirloom—like your papa’s favorite shirt—it creates an exciting new arc in its life’s journey. Just ask Kayla, a dedicated upcycler and soon-to-be bride, who brings a whole new meaning to the idea of family fabric.

For her upcoming wedding, Kayla contacted us to assist with a unique project: to turn her late father’s dress shirt into hair scrunchies for her sisters. While we normally wouldn’t accommodate small-batch custom requests, we considered this project to be an absolute honor to pay tribute to her dad this way. It also raises awareness about a larger narrative we’re trying to tell: that repurposing materials is more than just “going green”. Sure, reducing waste is a crucial perk but it’s also about the art of taking old things and turning them into something profound. That’s what makes Kayla’s vision so special. As she wrote in her email, “My Dad was my 'person'. It would just mean a lot to us, but more specifically me, to have a little piece of him with me on the special day!” We were so touched by this request that we immediately got on a call with our lead sewer who was equally excited about the project.
It highlights what we’re striving to do—as best we can from the humble quarters of our small Canadian studios. We want our patrons to recognize that every upcycled, handmade scrunchie from Chelsea King is a delicate reinvention of its former self.

The Process is Just As Important As The Product
The Process is Just As Important As The Product
Kayla’s efforts are a beautiful way to embrace this cycle. By commemorating a passed loved one for her wedding, she’s modelling a larger creative vision which is aligned with our upcycling efforts. Her undertaking is just a glimpse of the many other stories we hope to tell. As a slow fashion brand, we want to bring more awareness to the value of hands-on manufacturing, where the process is just as important as the product. It’s thanks to the patience and passion of our treasured sewers who are integral to materializing this goal.
With each transformed textile, every handmade stitch helps continue a broader conversation, much like Kayla’s, about how old materials still have so much love to give. They need a home, outside of the landfill, so they can be repurposed, enjoyed and even passed on. Ultimately, it’s up to us—consumers, manufacturers and retailers—to help restore value to unused goods in a way that’s meaningful and sustainable.
We hope that more people will explore creative avenues for upcycling old fabric. And by extension, as this priority grows on a larger scale, we hope that more industries will develop eco-forward projects like Kayla’s.
